Reels + Spools
Divers Use Reels and Spools For Various Tasks Whilst Diving, from towing an SMB (Surface Marker Buoy) on a drift dive so the skipper can track you to laying a line to penetrate a wreck safely so the diver has a route out of the wreck. Sometimes divers carry reels and SMB’s just in case!
Essentially there are 3 types of reel divers use regularly. An SMB reel like the classic MGE reels, these allow line to be let our on some kind of braked ratchet so that the line doesnt tangle, and are reeled in a straight line so easy to reel in on ascent. A line laying or wreck reel, like the Dive Rite Reels, these reels have a 90 degree handle to make it simpler to run the line horizontally, braked as well they tend to be made of alluminium or stainless steel. We then have spools, ideal for setting an SMB mid water, due to limited amount of line, compact and easy to carry, and always worth carrying as a backup.
Most reels will do all jobs but not well, so the right reel for the job is a good idea. The reels we sell are reels that we would use and have used for many years!
